Although your Money file requires little in the way of upkeep and maintenance,there are a few steps you should take in order to help protect your financial information.

To play it safe, you should set up a routine to periodically create a backup of your Money file. By default, Money prompts you to back up to a floppy disk every 14 days, but you may prefer more or less frequent backups depending on how often you use the software. Also, in setting up the backup options, you can specify alternate locations where you would like Money to save your backup files.

If something happens to your primary Money file, you can restore your Money backup file to get up and running again.

Typically, you should enter all of your accounts into a single Money file. Having all of your accounts — and those of other family members — together will help you by providing more accurate information for planning and reports.

It is also a good idea to create a new Money file to experiment with various features without affecting your real Money data. To help you experiment, Microsoft Money ships with a sample file that you can open to see how an fictitious family (the Andersons) have used Microsoft Money to track their finances.
